Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

We wouldn’t be able to run Sankofa Community Connection without the generous contributions from donors across the globe. .

Why are we raising money?
We created this page to raise funds so that we are able to take the youth and their parents during April Vacation 2017, to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in DC. Your support has the power to immediately make a difference in someone’s life. It will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the community to travel together and experience all that the museum has to offer. I took my 3 children to visit in November 2016 (it was uplifiting, inspiring, and unforgettable).

Demographics/Community Data:
Students The Middle School come from a diverse background. We are located in the City of Newport, RI and since 64% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch (which is considered a measure of economic need) we are considered a high poverty school. This is not something that our families would be able to afford on their own.

The funds will go towards paying for the charter bus that seats 57 passengers (around $10,000 for the bus), lodging for 58 (including the bus driver will cost around $2,500) and a voucher for 1 meal per participant while in the museum ($500). Participants will be responsible for their food for the remainder of the trip.

Since space is limited, each participant will complete applications to be reviewed by a team of SCC board members.

- We have volunteers donating their time to video tape a documentary and take photos for each of the families to keep to remember the trip.

-We have a donor for our t-shirts.

-We have one food sponsor so far.

Sankofa Community Connection created the history and culture club at the local middle school in Newport, RI. Our goal is to introduce cultural local history in a way that directly involves the students and makes their surroundings more relevant. It will also serve to provide a perspective on how various cultures lived in early Newport that is not often seen. Students will participate in a walking tour of Newport RI, could create an app that will guide others on the tour, participate in an excavation and archaeology lessons, create art that reflects their experience, take field trips and many other exciting activities.

ALL of your support will go toward this trip, so every penny counts.

We look forward to being able to bring families to enjoy this cultural experience so that they can bring what they learn back to the community.

Thank you for your donation!
